On Wednesday, 26 March, the kick-off meeting of the CHANGES project took place in Limassol, Cyprus. Our Centre was represented by the project coordinator, Dr Krzysztof Narloch.
The CHANGES project (Cultural Heritage and Archaeology for the study and dissemination of Natural, Geological, Environmental and Social events due to climate changes in antiquity: learning from the past for a better awareness in the future) is an international research initiative funded by the European Union. Its main objective is the interdisciplinary study of the impact of climate change in antiquity and the use of this knowledge to foster greater public awareness of today’s environmental challenges. By analysing natural, geological, and social phenomena from the past, the project participants aim to better understand how ancient communities responded to climate crises and the strategies they employed to adapt.
A number of prestigious institutions from across Europe are involved in the project: the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence (Cyprus), Università degli Studi Gabriele d’Annunzio di Chieti-Pescara (Italy), Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Spain), The Cyprus Institute, University of Cyprus, Institute for Mediterranean Studies/FORTH (Greece), UD’Anet SRL, and JD ARCHPROSPECT Joanna Dąbal.
CHANGES is a project of particular relevance in the context of contemporary climate change. By demonstrating how the past can inspire the present, it supports the development of scientific and educational tools that contribute to a better understanding of, and response to, the effects of the climate crisis.
